Build

Generate efficiently. Store intelligently. Operate continuously.

Solar PV, battery storage and the electrical infrastructure behind them — engineered, installed and commissioned by the same team that will operate the asset for the next 25 years. Over 10 MW installed across 40+ projects, most of it in Johannesburg, Pretoria and wider Gauteng.

Who this is for

Sites where energy is an operating cost, not a line item

Our build work is concentrated in industrial parks, manufacturing plants and retail centres: sites with daytime load, meaningful roof area, and a real cost attached to every outage. If your electricity bill is one of your biggest operating costs, this is the scale we build at.

What we build for

One system, three jobs.

A commercial energy system earns its keep three ways. Each is engineered in from the start. None of them happens by accident.

Generate efficiently

An array only generates what the installation allows. Mounting, stringing and cabling are executed to the engineering design, because every shortcut taken on a roof is paid back in lost yield, every year of the asset's life.

Store intelligently

Storage is installed around the site's real demands: the loads that must ride through an outage, the peaks worth shaving, the evenings solar can still serve. The integration of protection, changeover and control is what makes a battery behave intelligently.

Operate continuously

When the utility fails, the build is what gets tested: the changeover, the protection and the backed-up circuits either work as installed, or the site goes dark with everyone else. Build quality is what turns an outage into a non-event, and we install every system knowing we will be the ones operating it.

What's included

One contractor, the whole installation

No split responsibility between a solar installer, an electrician and a battery vendor. Focal delivers the complete system and signs for all of it.

Commercial solar PV

Rooftop solar installations engineered for commercial and industrial buildings: structural loading, wind zones and roof condition assessed before a single mounting rail goes down.

Battery storage

Commercial battery storage sized against your load profile and outage exposure: for load shedding continuity, peak shaving or shifting solar energy into evening consumption.

Electrical infrastructure

Upgrades to distribution boards, cabling, protection and metering where the existing installation can't support the new system. Done once, documented, and built to be maintained.

Testing & commissioning

Every string, inverter and protection device is tested against the design before energisation. Commissioning results become the performance baseline the asset is measured against for its operating life.

Compliance & handover

Statutory electrical compliance documentation, as-built drawings and O&M manuals handed over at completion: the paper trail your insurers, auditors and future engineers will ask for.

How it works

From approved design to energised asset

01

Detailed engineering

The approved feasibility design is developed into construction drawings, equipment schedules and a build programme agreed with your operations team.

02

Procurement & construction

Equipment is procured to specification and installed by our teams. Work around live operations is planned so your site keeps running.

03

Grid connection & energisation

Utility inspections, protection settings and the SSEG sign-off are completed before the system is switched on, legally and safely.

04

Commissioning & handover

Measured commissioning results are checked against the model, monitoring is brought online, and the asset moves into 24/7 operations.

Built and modelled

Our largest published build: 778 kWp in Pretoria

Hermanstad Industrial is a 778 kWp manufacturing installation modelled at 1,245 MWh in year one, R2.34 million in savings at a R1.88/kWh blended tariff, a 4-year payback and 1,121 tonnes of CO₂ avoided annually. Every figure is published as the design-stage model it is, with its assumptions alongside.

Common questions

Installation FAQs

Where do you install commercial solar systems?

Most of our fleet is in Gauteng — Johannesburg and Pretoria in particular — with 40+ completed projects and over 10 MW installed. We assess commercial sites across South Africa.

Will construction disrupt our operations?

Most of the installation happens on the roof and in plant rooms without affecting daily operations. The electrical tie-in requires a planned shutdown, which we schedule with your team, typically outside operating hours.

Do we need battery storage, or is solar enough?

It depends on your load profile and what outages cost you. Solar alone cuts energy cost; batteries add continuity through load shedding and can shift solar energy into evening use. We model both against your interval data rather than defaulting to either answer.

What size systems do you build?

Our published case studies range from 53 kWp to 778 kWp, across industrial, manufacturing and retail sites. System size is an output of your consumption data and roof area, not a starting point.

Who is responsible for the system after handover?

We are. Focal designs, builds and then operates the asset under long-term agreements: 24/7 remote monitoring, maintenance and monthly performance reports. The builder and the operator being the same company is deliberate. There is no one else to blame if performance slips.

The build starts with the model.

Tell us your monthly electricity usage and we'll model what your site could support: the same model your system would then be engineered, built and commissioned to.
